Asteroids

Asteroid or the “ killer rock ” is a small solar system body, whose size varies from a planet to a meteoroid. The smaller ones are called as “minor planets” and the larger ones are called as “planetoids”. The size of an asteroid varies from 1000 km up to 1 meter. These asteroids together form an Asteroid belt and orbits around the Sun. This asteroid belt is between Mars and Jupiter and has elliptical orbit. Some scientists believe that asteroid belt is remnants of a planet which was destroyed in the collision whereas others believe that they are material left from a planet which was never formed due to Jupiter’s gravitational force.   How are they formed? There are three types of asteroids:   Carbon type, silicate type and metallic type.   The core of asteroid is either rocky core, nickel-iron core or carbonaceous core; depending on their composition.   The process of asteroid formation can be widely seen as a contrasting process, as we are not quite sure about its c

New Planetary System

The Extra solar planet encyclopedia has been updated recently with a new discovery of planetary system. This planetary system called as HIP 65426 is weirdest in all sense. It has got researches and astronomers thinking as in how can such system exist. HIP 65426 consists of a star named HIP 65426 and a planet named HIP 65426b. The planet’s temperature is around 1300-1600 Kelvin. It has a radius of 1.5 times greater than that of Jupiter and mass between six to twelve times of Jupiter’s mass. A group of astronomers and researchers from Max Planck Institute of Astronomy (MPIA) have found this system. Now, why is HIP 65426 is weird? This star and planet questions the current models of stars and solar systems. How? This is how. The planet, HIP 65426b is a massive star that orbits a fast spinning star (HIP 65426). The star spins approximately 150 times faster than the sun! Also, the star is 14 million years young. This has raised many questions. Gael Chauvin of University

Event Horizon Telescope

Black holes have always been a mystery to many. Many scientists have dedicated their lives for the study of black holes. Although till date, we still don’t have an actual picture of a Black hole; scientists are trying to get a closer look at it. And with advancements in the field of technology, soon we’ll be able to see an actual picture of a black hole. How is it possible? Let’s see. Event Horizon Telescope is a project which has been started to study the event horizon of the black hole -Sagittarius A* which is situated in our galaxy. It will capture the pictures of the event horizon and send it back to Earth.   Before going into detail of this project, first let’s see what an Event Horizon is. Event Horizon: Event horizon is a boundary in space-time, beyond which the events cannot affect the outside observer. Simply put, it is the boundary of no returns. It is the boundary of the black hole, beyond which events are not affected by the space time and once in this bou

Black Hole

“Black holes are where God divided by zero” – Albert Einstein.  Black holes are giant black bodies in the outer space, which have baffled the minds of many! Many believe their existence as an enormous body that pulls everything in and destroys it and many other believe their existence as a place where time stops and freezes everything. But apart from these beliefs, there are real questions like: how black hole is formed? How it was discovered and what are the theories that explain the nature of the black hole. Black holes are formed when a star collapses upon itself. In short, a star causes a supernova and explodes to form a black hole. Simple enough, isn’t it? Now let’s get into the discovery of black hole and many theories surrounding it. BEGINNING OF BLACK HOLE THEORY:   The idea of Black hole was first put forth in the 18 th century by John Michell. He put forth this idea in a letter published in 1783-84. The calculations in the letter assumed that such body

Parallel Universe

We have heard and seen many existence of other dimensions, in the science fictional stories and movies. But is it actually possible to have more dimensions apart from the already existing four dimensions? Many physicists believe this idea and call it “parallel universe”. Parallel universe is defined as hypothetical universes which exist just like the one in which we are currently living. It consists of everything- energy, time, space, matter- just like our present universe.   Collection of multiple parallel universes is called as “multiple universes” or “multiverse”. Concepts of multiverse are also evident in ancient Hindu cosmology. According to Hindu mythology, every universe has its own set of rules and is governed by its own god. Scientifically, it’s true. Every universe has its own sets of fundamental rules and is governed by it. How did the idea of parallel universe came into existence? Mostly from science fiction but there is a scientific theory behind
