Parallel Universe

We have heard and seen many existence of other dimensions, in the science fictional stories and movies. But is it actually possible to have more dimensions apart from the already existing four dimensions? Many physicists believe this idea and call it “parallel universe”. Parallel universe is defined as hypothetical universes which exist just like the one in which we are currently living. It consists of everything- energy, time, space, matter- just like our present universe.  Collection of multiple parallel universes is called as “multiple universes” or “multiverse”.

Concepts of multiverse are also evident in ancient Hindu cosmology. According to Hindu mythology, every universe has its own set of rules and is governed by its own god. Scientifically, it’s true. Every universe has its own sets of fundamental rules and is governed by it.

How did the idea of parallel universe came into existence? Mostly from science fiction but there is a scientific theory behind it. The idea of parallel universe came from String theory. In string theory, the multiverse is a theory in which our universe is not the only one existing; there are many such universes which exist parallel to ours. In simple terms, it may be possible that there are various versions of you- some of them are reading this blog, just like you and others are doing some other activities.

Now you may ask, what is the probability that you and your twin from multiverse are doing the same thing? Although scientists are still not sure about the shape of space-time, it is considered flat and it stretches infinitely. And since it is infinite, it must be repeating itself at some point as there are only finite numbers of ways in which the particles can be arranged. Due to this, there will be at least one twin which will be doing the exact same thing as you!

When the idea was put forth, everybody did not agree. Of course there were biased opinions. Some did not believe in it while others agreed to it so much that they even believed that it is possible to make contacts with these universes. Also later, it was mathematically proven the existence of parallel universe and math cannot be wrong!

Today, scientists say that they have even found evidence of parallel universe. The ‘cold spot’ or the super void which was discovered recently seems to be the pass way to the parallel universe. It is particularly a very cold spot in space with many galaxies missing. It has baffled many scientists as it is not very common for such a void to occur.

Another theory suggests that black holes are portals to the parallel universe. This theory is put forth by Professor Stephen Hawking. Professor Hawking told the audience at Harvard University that black holes "aren't the eternal prisons they were once thought". He added: "Things can get out of a black hole, both from the outside and possibly through another universe."

Since the discovery of these two theories mentioned above, many scientists have started working more vigorously on the concept of parallel universe. However if we do discover parallel universe and find a way to connect with it, we shall have made a major discovery in the field of astrophysics!

Super Void

As mysterious as it can get, Universe has always been a place for strange and weird things. Now, scientists have a “Super-Void” in space which is missing galaxies! So before we get in to the topic, first let’s discuss what is “Void” According to Wikipedia, Voids or Cosmic Voids , as they are called, are vast spaces between galaxy filaments in the universe, which has few or 0 galaxies. Galaxy filaments are largest know structures in the universe, which have thread-like structures. They form boundaries between voids in space. These voids have very less density of matter that is considered for typical observable universe. Voids are believed to be formed in Big Bang, followed by massive collapse its mass and compressed by Baryonic matter . After Big Bang, there were lots of areas with high and low densities, which were changing rapidly. The regions with high density collapsed rapidly under gravity eventually causing foam-like structure of cosmic web of voids. Voids loc...

New Horizons Spacecraft

New Horizons spacecraft is launched with primary mission to flyby Pluto and its moons and study them. But before we get into this blog, read the previous blog about the planet Pluto and get an overall idea about the planet. Now that you have read about Pluto’s history, orbit and composition let’s get into this NASA’s New Frontiers Program- New Horizons.   New Horizon is space probe which was launched on January 19, 2006.It is engineered by Johns HopkinsUniversity   Applied Physics Laboratory  (APL) and the  Southwest ResearchInstitute  (SwRI), with a team led by  S. Alan Stern . The name “New Horizons” was derived from Pluto’s moons, Nix and Hydra. The first letters of their names, N and H are initials of New Horizons. MISSION: The primary mission of New Horizons spacecraft is to study Pluto and study one or more Kuiper belt objects.   Originally the mission was to explore the undiscovered planets and objects in the solar system. Thi...

The Black Hole Party

The very idea of black hole is baffling and scary at the same time. Many scientists have dedicated their lives for studying these scary things. Why scary? C’mon let’s be honest.   Getting sucked by a black hole due to its strong gravitational field means instant death. Although we still don’t know what exactly will happen if a human being falls in the black hole , we have drawn our conclusions based on what it does to light. That’s why; it may sound even scarier when we learned that scientists have discovered a dozen of black holes teaming up at the center of our galaxy-Milky way.   Data from NASA’s orbiting Chandra X-ray observatory has allowed researchers to detect a group of black holes surrounding Sagittarius A*. Sagittarius A* is a super massive black hole at the center of Milky Way-that’s where we are. For a while now, scientists have believed that there is something at this place and now it’s confirmed! Based on the findings,   up to 10,000 black h...
